A coup in March 2013 and large-scale violence by Christian and Muslim militias caused a humanitarian crisis; by the end of the year over 20 per cent of the population had been displaced. Despite serious security incidents MSF offered emergency relief in various locations, including the city of Bossangoa, and appealed to the UN to expand its presence. The team continued to support hospitals in Boguila and Zémio.
